Improved and simplified look and feel for the home page

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

In our ongoing effort to improve the user experience, we have changed the look and feel of our home page. We have made it more simplified.

The logo and the search box are now placed at the page center. The menus are moved to the top of the page. What’s new and Buzz sections now come at the page bottom. We have tried to make the home page less cluttered.

See the following thumbnail images (click on the image to see it in full size) to understand the changes we have done.

Please give your feedback on this.

Now search round trip travel routes in free text search bar!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Our free text search bar now supports round trip search requests too and you don’t have to search twice for your round trip journey. Instead you can now search something like

Bangalore to Mumbai tomorrow morning and return on tomorrow night ,

and you will get both onward and return routes.  Or you can search something like

Delhi to kolkata by flight on friday and back on monday morning.

If you have observed my examples closely you must have noticed that free text search bar now  supports time range along with date too.  So you can have any of these time range in your search queries: morning, evening, tonight, noon, night,  afternoon etc.

So go ahead and try it out. 🙂

Now you can specify travel class in your natural language searches too

Monday, April 6th, 2009

People have been demanding the feature of being able to specify the travel class in their free text search queries. As Rockey had put in a comment earlier.

I am pleased to announce, that its now out there. Some examples of specifying the travel class:

Lucknow to Delhi AC Train
Kolkata to aligarh by sleeper class next tuesday
Jammu to agra by 3 AC on saturday
hyderabad to Jaipur by 2 AC train

Its quite tolerant in terms of how you specify class. For example train class 3A can be specified as 3rd AC, AC, or as 3A.

All the train classes are supported:
– SL (Sleeper)
– 2A (AC 2 tier)
– 1A (AC First class)
– FC (Non AC First Class)
– CC (Chair Car)
– 2S (non-AC seating)

(point to note here is that if a class is not supported by a train we still show that train and try to show a class which is close enough. For e.g. if somebody wants 2A and its not there then we may show a 3A class as default if 3A is there in the train)

The flight classes supported are Economy and Business.

Classes supported in a Bus are Seater, Sleeper, but  the search end its not implemented.  Meaning even if you specify a class for bus travel, it will ignore it, as of now. But on our results page we do show you the supported classes by the Bus Operator.

Try it out! Feedback very welcome.

Spelling Mishtakes on a lovely friday morning

Friday, January 16th, 2009

We’ve seen that users when typing a query in free text search interface make quite a few spelling mistakes.

The poor engine at 90di still always tries and makes sense out of it. And you would love to know that in most cases it does not do too bad!

Lets look at some common and some comic spelling mistakes:

1) A genuine misspell of one letter (most common occurrences).
Particularly happens if an over-worked guy on a late Thursday evening, is trying to book a ticket to Hyderabad in a hurry.

Bangaloer to Hyderabda

This one is piece of cake 🙂 for the engine to understand. Verify it for yourself:
Bangaloer to Hyderabda

2) The second kind of query happens when some body is trying to get naughty with the system:

Bangalur to Hderbd

Looks like the engine can understand this also quite okay:
Bangalur to Hderbd

3) Now we have somebody who has learned to type only on her mobiles 😉

bnglr to hydrbd

Well, we don’t do too bad here either. Don’t believe it? See it for yourself:
bnglr to hydrbd

We invite you to try out some more funny spelling mistakes and provide us with your in-valve-able (oops invaluable) feedback.

Headstart very near

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

We had blogged about HeadStart event some time back. The event is on 9th and 10th January 2009 at the NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bangalore.

You can now search for 3-leg routes on 90di!

Monday, July 7th, 2008

We just made an enhancement to our travel search engine!

With this change, we start to show the results for places to which you can not reach within a single change (or using just 2 trains or flights). Here are a few examples of the kind of travel questions we are able to answer now, with this feature:

1) How do I travel from Birur to Bareilly?

For example if you search for trains from Birur (a small place in Karnataka) to Bareilly (a place in U.P). Then you need about 3 trains (2 changes) to do that, as its not possible to travel by any less (Except on Friday). And we try to get and show you the best routes possible for this particular journey.

2) Another example: Kandla – Dimapur

Kandla is a place in the western part of Gujrat and Dimapur is in the far eastern Assam. There is no direct train between them. Also if you look for options with 1 change there is just 1 (via Delhi). But if you are okay for 2 changes you get whole lot of options. The 2 change options are more practical too as typically you can take a flight (or a fast train) for the 2nd leg (or the major leg) of the journey.

So just try doing a few searches on  90di  and tell us how you find this feature.

(Hint: Select any two random stations in India and do a search, most likely you will get an answer! This is not most often possible with the search showing only upto 2 legs.)

We hope that this feature of showing 3-leg flight/train routes has really enhanced our  coverage in terms of being able to give an answer in terms of travel between the remotest of locations in India.

Also the search finds out the best route possible (if you use the TRAIN + FLIGHT search) via any flight or train. The same things also works very well, for just for trains or for flights.

As always we would love to get any feedback on this feature.
